Haagen-Dazs, Oakland, Calif., introduces Haagen-Dazs Light, a superpremium ice cream that delivers all the quality and taste consumers expect from the brand, but with 50 percent less fat (5g vs. 16g) and 29 percent fewer calories (190 vs. 268) than the original superpremium ice cream.

A proprietary European process that uses slow, low-temperature blending allows Haagen-Dazs to use the same all natural ingredients (such as egg yolks) that are incorporated in its full-fat ice cream without the addition of artificial sweeteners, fat substitutes or air.
“The everyday consumer has morphed into a connoisseur in the pursuit of affordable indulgence,” says chocolate authority and trendmeister Joan Steuer. “It’s the attention to detail, the fine craftsmanship and all natural ingredients that allow HaagenâDazs to turn a treat like ice cream into the everyday luxury consumers demand.”
Available nationwide in June, flavors include: Dutch Chocolate, Dulche De Leche, Cherry Fudge Truffle, Coffee, S’mores, Vanilla Bean and Mint Chip.

Kraft Mac & Cheese gets calcium boost

According to the 2005 USDA Dietary Guidelines, calcium is a "nutrient of concern" for children and adolescents, and recommended dairy servings are increased to three per day for ages eight and older.
To help kids get the calcium they need to build and maintain strong bones, Kraft Foods Inc., Northfield, Ill., doubled the calcium in a traditional favorite -- Kraft Macaroni & Cheese -- so kids can get the nutrition they need in a food they already love. Each one-cup serving is an excellent source of calcium and a good source of protein, iron and five other important nutrients. Additionally, when prepared using fat-free milk and margarine, each serving is 60 percent lower in fat and 20 percent lower in calories than the classic preparation.
Some 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, and 34 million are at risk of the debilitating bone disease, according to a report by the surgeon general, who issued a call-to-action for kids to get more calcium, vitamin D and physical activity.
"When you consider 90 percent of bone mass is formed by the age of 17, it's critical that kids begin building strong bones early on," says Joy Bauer, MS, RD and author of “Cooking with Joy.” "Parents need new, kid-friendly food and fitness solutions to this chronic problem to ensure kids can build a solid foundation for their future."

According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the number one killer of American women, but there are a few relatively simple steps women can take to lower their risk. “Research shows that adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle -- such as a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and getting regular exercise -- can lower heart disease risk by as much as 82 percent," says Jean Storlie, M.S., R.D., and manager at General Mills' Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition.
To that end, Yoplait, a brand of General Mills, Minneapolis, rolls out Yoplait Healthy Heart yogurt nationwide in four flavors -- Strawberry, Harvest Peach, Cherry Orchard and Strawberry Banana. It’s the first yogurt available in the U.S. that contains cholesterol-lowering plant sterols, clinically proven cholesterol reducers. While results vary by individual, studies have shown that eating 0.8 g of plant sterols -- the amount found in two servings of Yoplait Healthy Heart -- each day over a period of as little as four weeks may reduce LDL or "bad" cholesterol by an average of 6 percent.
"Often when women set out to lower their cholesterol through the foods they eat, they think they need to remove their favorites from their diet,” says Storlie. “With Yoplait Healthy Heart, they can continue to enjoy Yoplait yogurt while getting the cholesterol-lowering benefits of plant sterols."
Plant sterols naturally occur in certain foods. However, to get the same amount of plant sterols as two servings of Yoplait Healthy Heart through other foods, it would take one of the following choices: 22 servings of Brussels sprouts, 24 servings of broccoli or cauliflower, 70 large carrots, 100 medium potatoes, 56 servings of wax beans, 44 medium apples or 26 oranges.
