Xtend sucromalt is a new, fully digestible, slow-release carbohydrate that delivers the full energy of sugar but is digested more slowly in the body. The all-natural sweetener is a syrup derived from sucrose and maltose. It offers product developers the benefits of slow digestibility, including sustained energy release and lower glycemic response. Xtend sucromalt releases its carbohydrates into the bloodstream slowly, resulting in a muted blood sugar response and a slow energy release versus the fast energy release and higher glycemic response of sugar. It fills a functional gap between full-calorie sweeteners and reduced-calorie sweeteners. The product is GRAS with no daily intake limit and is 60 to 70 percent as sweet as sugar.

Among its new “ingredient solution sets,” the vendor launched two systems that provide sweetening as well as other functionalities. Cereal Bar Rebalance 703 provides binding and cohesion and increases the protein content while also allowing a 25-40 percent reduction in sugar and a 33 percent reduction in total carbohydrates. Cereal Bar Rebalance 704 allows for bars with lower sugar and higher protein. Both ingredient solution sets have undergone sensory testing that shows they can produce reduced- or low-carb bars similar to those with higher fat and sugar.

Still relatively new on the sweetener scene, Palatinose is a functional carbohydrate. Like fructose or sucrose, it is fully digested and thus has the same caloric value. Unlike these traditional sugars, however, Palatinose is digested much more slowly and promotes fat oxidation. This slow digestibility also results in a very low glycemic response and a low insulinemic response, which in turn help avoid peaks and lows in blood sugar and blood insulin. It’s a suitable ingredient to help consumers reduce snacking and overeating and manage their weight more effectively – while providing the natural, sweet taste of a natural constituent of honey and sugar cane.

In the past, organic sugar has been difficult to use in applications such as soft drinks where color is critical. Most organic sugar has been based on brown cane sugars, which have typical cane off-notes, and many companies have sought an alternative. Naturesweet LC is a range of low-color, organic liquid sweeteners. They are crystal clear in soft drinks and have a clean, sweet taste, making them a suitable organic sweetness solution for numerous applications.
