Equipment Round-Up: February 2008 - Cleaning And Sanitation Products

Feb. 15, 2008
This equipment section features a liquid pre-treamtent, an ozone-dosing system and a cheap and easy vacuum.

Reduce cleaning time
Exelerate HS is a patent-pending, peroxyacid-acid based liquid pre-treatment designed to penetrate tenacious dairy and food processing soils and speed up the cleaning process for pasteurizers, kettles, HTSTs and other heated process equipment. The unique formula provides cleaner, shinier surfaces by removing the cooked-on protein soils as well as fat and carbohydrates. This product penetrates and pre-conditions soils on heated vessel walls making it easier to remove the deposits in less time.

Reduced wash times result in greater production capacity and improved operational efficiency.

Precise ozone dosing
Maintaining tight control of ozone dosing at final bottling presents unique challenges, but a new ozone dosing system for bottled water filling applications has been transformed by the addition of feed-forward control. The integrated system provides control and precision of ozone dosing that is also very easy to use. This product gives water bottlers unmatched control of ozone concentration by correcting for a wide variety of variables. Includes new control architecture and monitoring through an easy-to-use touchscreen display.

Flexible washer
A new model of dual vat and bin washer has the flexibility to wash and sanitize either one bin or two vats at a time using a removable adaptor attached to the door. This eliminates the need to buy two specialty machines, one for each type of container.

The Model DVBW-1000-C saves water, chemicals and labor while reducing the incidence of injury normally associated with trying to hand wash these types of heavy containers.

Cheap and easy vacuum
Designed to meet the general plant cleaning and maintenance needs of food manufacturers, the GWD 255 is a cost-effective, easy-to-use drum vacuum. Powered by two independent bypass motors, it can fit both 30- and 55-gal. drums, allowing users to recycle drums that are abundant in nearly every production plant. An optional float chamber and washable cartridge filter allows the GWD 255 to pick up both wet and dry materials, and the machine can also be fitted with an upstream HEPA filter for pick-up of hazardous materials down to and including 0.3 microns in size.

Automate cleaning of tanks
The Retractable Tank Washer (RTW) is a new (2008) fully automated solution for cleaning tanks, reactors and vessels. It eliminates time-consuming, dangerous manual cleaning, reduces consumption of costly chemicals and water and cleans tanks thoroughly and consistently. The RTW also eliminates the need for workers to manually insert and remove the tank washer from the tank/reactor. A pneumatic mechanism lowers and raises the unit at the beginning and end of cleaning cycles. It's controlled by an easy-to-use control panel that allows users to set multiple stopping points between full insertion and retraction.

UV destroys microbes
Medium pressure ultraviolet (UV) water disinfection systems are helping a number of bottled water producers in England keep their product free from microbial contamination. The systems are highly effective at destroying all water-borne microorganisms, and they do not affect the pH or chemical composition of the water, so flavor is not affected. Systems consist of a stainless steel treatment chamber containing one or more UV-emitting tubes surrounded by a protective quartz sleeve.

Water passes through the chamber and the UV kills any microorganisms present by destroying their DNA. The systems are easy to install and need very little maintenance.

Long-term antimicrobial lockers
Antimicrobial Lockers are finished with an advanced powder coating that inhibits bacterial, mold and odor build-up on locker surfaces as well as the touch transfer of microbes on handles and doors. Any moisture triggers the controlled release of silver ions to provide protection for decades. The antimicrobial compound is completely inorganic, less toxic than ordinary table salt, less irritating than talcum powder, noxious even to the drug-resistant MRSA superbug and has been approved for medical devices and food contact applications. The cost for this protection is nominal, considering it will last for the estimated 20-year lifecycle of the locker.

Water disinfection systems
UV water disinfection solutions allow businesses to reduce the amount of toxic byproducts they produce, decrease energy use and benefit from reduced maintenance costs and lowest total cost of ownership. The design achieves complete, broad-spectrum bacteria kill. Its out-of-the-water UV lamp eliminates the drawbacks of immersed lamp designs and significantly reduces maintenance time, complexity and costs. The quartz-tube chamber dual sensor configuration ensures that light accurately matches requirements. Since no chemicals are used to disinfect the water, poisonous run-off and ground contamination are eliminated.
