New iPhone App helps consumers get the 411 on food ingredients

April 14, 2010

I'll admit it: I'm a slave to my iPhone. If there's an app that will help me to be a more educated or more productive member of society, then queue up my App Store and show me the way.

I'll admit it: I'm a slave to my iPhone. If there's an app that will help me to be a more educated or more productive member of society, then queue up my App Store and show me the way.

Today I received an e-mail about an iPhone app that caught my eye and fell into the "keep Erin more educated" category: The FoodEssentials Scanner.

My kids aren't allergic to anything (other than homework) so my trips to the grocery store can be fairly easy. I am not a big label reader (other than to see if the bread I'm about to purchase contains the word "enriched" or not); however, I think that's mostly because I'm so confused by what the daily reccomendations are.

According to FoodEssential's email, The FoodEssentials scanner hopes to leverage technology to "simplify and personalize the food choice process."

Anton Xavier, CEO of FoodEssentials also had this to say, ¨We’re focused on delivering a personalized label experience for anyone with an allergy, food intolerance or specific need.¨

Well that's cool.

FoodEssentials says its Food Label Database is at the core of the application with the database containing 160,000 commercially available products and over 30,000 ingredients.

I have yet to download the App myself, but it almost seems worth the $4.99 price tag to know more about the ingredients in my food.
