07/29/2004

Filings for "carb"-based trademarks quadrupled in 2003, rising from 106 in 2002 to over 414 in 2003, according to the Annual Report on Trends in Trademarks 2004 by Dechert LLP. Among the companies filing for such trademarks were Wal-Mart, Unilever, Dannon, H.J. Heinz, HEB Grocery and Atkins Nutritionals. Meanwhile, in 2003 the number of applications for food, beverage, and nutritional supplement trademarks containing the word "protein" more than doubled from 2002, from 21 to 55. It’s also notable that the count of trademark applications for food and nutritional supplements containing the word "fat" dropped by nearly half.
