- Land O’Frost, Lansing, Ill., the sixth largest brand of lunch meats in the country, announced plans to build a $49 million, 175,000-sq.-ft. processing facility in Madisonville, Ky.
- The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration turned down applications for Kellogg, Battle Creek, Mich., to sell 18 vitamin-enriched products in that country. The ban affects enriched versions of flagship brands such as Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies and Special K as well as cereal bars that were to be launched on the Danish market later this year. The agency expressed concern the long-term consumption of enriched products could damage children’s livers and kidneys, as well as unborn babies.
- If the Dutch athletes at the Athens Olympics looked refreshed and hydrated, thanks perhaps should go to DSM Food Specialties. The Netherlands-based but worldwide ingredients company developed PeptoProSports just in time for the worldwide games. The drink, featuring peptides based on casein hydrolysate instead of sugars, allegedly reduced endurance athletes’ recovery times (between events) by 5 percent.
