Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages (CSAB) announced it will introduce new labeling on regular 7UP to provide more information to consumers about the natural ingredients in 7UP.
Cadbury Schweppes introduced the reformulated 7UP in spring 2006. The product was developed following Food and Drug Administration (FDA) written policy on natural products and ingredients. Many all natural products have relied on this same policy for years.
The debate centers on the use of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The ingredient has scrutinized as not being all natural due to its manufacturing process that causes its chemical bonds to be rearranged. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) recently served Cadbury with a lawsuit because of the all natural claim with HFCS.
CSPI said it would drop the planned lawsuit due to Cadbury Schweppes' label change.
"We know many consumers are interested in a wide variety of natural products and ingredients, but also that many, varied opinions on labeling of all natural products exist," Cadbury Schweppes said it a statement.
"Therefore, the new label will go beyond applicable regulations and move from saying '100% Natural' to specifically highlighting those 7UP natural ingredients, for which there is no debate. 7UP contains all natural flavors as well as no added colors, no artificial preservatives and no caffeine.”
