Sara Lee Corp. laid off roughly 300 staffers throughout its North American operations this week, including about 100 at its Downers Grove headquarters.
Sara Lee employs about 1,200 in Downers Grove and about 25,000 across North America. A company spokesman said the layoffs were part of cost-cutting moves aimed at improving profit margins.
Sara Lee, maker of a wide variety of products, from deli meats to its namesake bakery offerings, has struggled with spiking commodity prices, notably the price of wheat.
