On the morning after the polls closed, Washington state’s ballot initiative 522, which would have required labeling of foods with genetically modified ingredients, appeared to fail. With nearly all ballots counted, I-522 won the support of about 45 percent of voters, to 55 percent opposed. Local media reports said there was heavy out-of-state funding and lobbying for both sides of the issue. It was the second such test of GMO labeling: California voters defeated a similar measure last November 52-48 percent.
