$58 million Virginia roasting facility will create 135 jobs.

Peet’s Coffee this week announced plans to build a $58 million roasting facility in Suffolk, Va., to better serve its East Coast coffee shops and customers.

The 175,000-square-foot roastery will create 135 jobs. It will be Peet's first outside of its LEED Gold-certified location in Alameda, Calif., said CEO Dave Burwick.

Virginia was competing with five other Mid-Atlantic states for the project and gave the City of Suffolk a $1 million grant to assist with the project. The company will be eligible to receive sales and use tax exemptions on manufacturing equipment and will receive benefits from the Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Zone Grant Program. Funding and services to support the company’s employee training activities will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

John Reinhart, CEO of the Virginia Port Authority, noted, “Peet’s Coffee joins a flourishing coffee handling and manufacturing industry in Virginia that has taken notice of The Port of Virginia."
