Is Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) Unhealthy?
The flavor enhancer monosodium glutamate, or as most us know it -- MSG -- has often received a bad rap. The food additive was used as an additive as early as 1908 to give foods their umami flavor. After Americans began reporting non-specific symptoms, the glutamate component -- a derivative of which is found naturally in our bodies -- fell under intense scrutiny. Many years later, many people refuse MSG in their foods out of concern of its unhealthyness.
