Video: What Makes Cheese Cheesey

PBS’ Digital Studios goes to Antonelli’s Cheese House to discover what really goes into making different cheeses.

On PBS’s show “It’s Okay to be Smart” Kara Chadbourne from Antonelli’s Cheese House explains that the four main ingredients to make cheese are milk, cultures, rennet, and salt. While that would seem like four very intentional ingredients to put together, Chadbourne says that the first time cheese was made, it was actually an accident. A middle-eastern goatherder put his milk in a butchered goat’s stomach to save it for later, and after a few days when he went to drink the milk, it was a solid. Cheese may not have as glamorous a conception, but the end product sure is delicious.
