Food Processing's annual list of the top 100 food and beverage companies in the United States and Canada is the only list of its kind. Nowhere else can you sort manufacturers by sales, rank or income all in one place.

With a 14 percent sales increase in 2008, Nestle USA and Canada leapfrogged several huge processors to reach No. 1 on our Top 100 list. In what was undeniably a year full of challenges, the industry did fairly well. Only one of the 27 largest companies reported a decrease in sales, and 16 reported increases in net income, as well. Which, of course, means 11 were flat or worse off than they were in 2007.

Food Processing's annual list of the top 100 food and beverage companies in the United States and Canada is the only list of its kind. Nowhere else can you sort manufacturers by sales, rank or income all in one place.

If there is a theme running through the 2010 edition of the Food Processing Top 100, it may be less is more. As in lower sales can still mean higher profits.

Fifteen of the top 25 food & beverage companies on this list recorded lower sales in 2009 (or an early fiscal 2010) than they did in the previous year. Yet 18 of those 25 had higher net earnings.

That's not surprising when you consider that the recession hit a year earlier. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research the past recession began in December 2007, and it certainly was widely apparent early into 2008. That gave food & beverage processors the better part of a year or more to prepare for the worst.

We try not to make this annual list into any kind of a competition, but there is a new leader atop our Top 100© chart of the largest food & beverage processors in the U.S. and Canada: PepsiCo.

This year 19 of the top 25 companies increased sales in 2010, and 18 of them also improved profitability. For the whole group, 63 of the 100 had higher sales in their latest fiscal year, and 40 also upped their net incomes.

Food Processing's annual list of the top 100 food and beverage companies in the United States and Canada is the only list of its kind. Nowhere else can you sort manufacturers by sales, rank or income all in one place.

Our 37th annual Top 100© list ranks food and beverage processors based on their sales of value-added, consumer-ready goods that were processed in U.S. and Canadian facilities. You won't find a comparable list anywhere else; you won't find many of these figures anywhere else, either.

Two things strike us as we examine this year's list of the 100 largest food & beverage processors in the U.S. and Canada:
• A couple of companies have become so big and unfocused that they will or already have split into two companies.
• 2011 was very tough year on some of these companies.
