Rich Products’ UBR Redefines School Breakfast Segment

Feb. 17, 2010
Breakfast just got a little more fun and a lot more convenient. Now everybody has time to eat a healthy breakfast.
Research has shown that children who eat good breakfasts are more alert in class and are better able to learn. To that end, Buffalo, N.Y.-based Rich Products Corp. introduces the Ultimate Breakfast Round -- or the UBR -- a chewy, delicious, and nutritious breakfast disguised as a tasty treat. It's the ideal menu addition for schools that want to offer nutritional meals, boost participation in their breakfast programs and meet USDA national meal guidelines.   The UBR (pronounced "oooooh-ber") is freshly baked and made from 100% whole-grain oatmeal, wheat bran, and wheat germ.  Each 2.5-oz UBR contains 6g of fiber, 4g of protein, 2 servings of bread, 270 calories, and zero trans fat.  It supplies 65 percent of a child's required daily allowance for whole grains, a significant portion of fiber and the same amount of protein as four chewy granola bars, and comes in two varieties -- Razzberry Dazzle, a combination of raspberry and lemon flavor, and Cinnamon. It is available in both a 2.5-oz. and 1.5-oz. offering.   “We’re pleased that our product not only tastes great and is fun to eat, but has outstanding health benefits as well. ” says Gary Duszynski, director of foodservice bakery marketing.School Foodservice Directors appreciate the freezer to oven convenience of the UBR - no thawing or proofing needed.  Its handy grab-and-go sleeve makes it suitable for serving on the main line, at a kiosk, or even in the classrooms or on buses.  It fits within the USDA's 30-10-30 guidelines for school meals, which means it contains 30 percent or less calories from total fat, 10 percent or less calories from saturated fat, and less than 30 percent sugar by item weight. "Parents and schools have a real challenge these days," adds Dr. Shirley J. Brown, Ed. D., SNS, director, national training. "Kids are always on the go and they love to socialize, so they seldom take time to eat healthy breakfasts.  The UBR is the perfect solution.  It's easy to eat on the run, it's delicious, and it's nutritious. Breakfast just got a little more fun and a lot more convenient. Now everybody has time to eat a healthy breakfast." Schools that add the UBR to their menus often see a jump in their breakfast program participation. “We’re glad to have a simple breakfast option for our students that meets our nutritional requirements, especially for fiber and bread servings,” says Susan Birmingham, foodservice director for Frontier Central Schools in Western New York. "The UBR meets the criteria of the New York State Governor’s new “Healthy Kids, Healthy New York After-School Initiative” to help fight childhood obesity … The biggest plus is that it tastes great!”
