October 2006 Equipment Round-Up - Conveyors

Sept. 28, 2006
Conveyors help bring speed and efficiency to food processing plants and operations.

Shaking it up

Impulse Compact is a family of small electromagnetic shaker conveyors designed specifically for tight fitting processing and packaging distribution lines that require precise metering and low maintenance drives. Suitable for product mixing lines, ingredient feeding and scale feeding, they start and stop quickly to accurately meter product. Dedicated solid-state controls allow conveying pan amplitudes to range from zero to 100 percent to adjust for different products or processing conditions. The electromagnetic shakers can be adjusted from low-stroke/high-cycle mode for gentle product handling to high-stroke/low-cycle mode for faster throughput or to handle heavier product. Sizes range from 8 to 15.7 in. wide and from 5 to 6.5 ft. long.

Batch weighing included

An accurate batch weighing system for dry and powdered minor/micro-ingredients is an integral part of the Model MIS-1 conveyor system. It can handle multiple-size bins and can be reconfigured easily for formula changes. The system incorporates an electronic scale that can be either a platform-type with a removable container or a hopper-type with a bottom discharge gate. It has individually removable bins designed to allow quick exchange during recipe or formula changes -- which takes less than 5 mins.  Each bin -- with capacities from 5 to 30 cu. ft. -- has three vertical sides and a single incline hopper with a minimum incline of 60°.

Stronger at the splice

More than 85 percent of all flat-flex belt breaks occur at or near the splice joint, but the EZSplice System makes the spliced joint the strongest, rather than weakest, point on the belt. This belt splicing system is designed to extend the strength and life of the flat-flex, open-mesh stainless steel belt and the C-CureEdge belting. This system eliminates the weak points caused by the bending and weaving of a traditional splice, speeds installation time and dramatically increases belt life.

Versatile and vibratory

Suitable for all vibratory conveying applications, the Flexcentric conveyor uses a patented indirect long-stroke drive for uniform product spreading, rapid start/stop conveying and low maintenance reliability. It is suitable for heavy load conveying, spreading, aligning, singulating, scalping, inspection, removal of fines, surface water and oil and feeding product to single or multiple locations. The simple, mechanical drive has no gearbox, requires no lubrication and has very low rotational inertia.

Metric in the U.S.

The 1700 Series conveyor rollers are now available in select metric sizes in the U.S. The standardized, modular, cost-effective rollers can be ordered anywhere in the world in the appropriate size. Customers in the U.S. previously had difficulty when it came time to replace rollers on machines made in Europe. A universal roller series suitable for almost all applications, it features a shock absorbing, noise reducing plastic housing with a load capacity of up to 360 lbs., depending on materials and sizes.

Emphasis on sanitation

Safety, functionality, ergonomics, sanitation and durability are key features of the Next Generation Sanitary Conveyors. The latest in 3D engineering combined with the patented open frame design reduce horizontal surfaces to minimize moisture accumulation, allow tool-free disassembly for washing, and feature Silveron antimicrobial components. The new design eliminates rust, oxidation, and hidden cavities where contamination grows.

Stainless conveyor

A new Stainless Steel Conveyor is fully rated for product washdown and can be wet-cleaned after production runs. The corrosion-resistant construction reduces wear and tear and extends conveyor component life over traditional designs. It uses a modular plastic belt conveying surface, eliminating the need for rollers and providing a continuous surface for product conveying. A wide variety of styles and optional features allow for flexibility in system design.

Cocoa powder flows

The C-Series of vacuum conveyors can quickly move cocoa and other powders during food processing applications. It features a unique fluidizer option that creates a consistent, reliable flow to ensure the powder is transported without error. This prevents downtime from unscheduled stoppage of the machinery. The fluidizer option reduces friction between the powder and the base and between the powder particles themselves. This allows the cocoa powder to flow like water. Extremely sanitary and quiet, the conveyors can move up to 15 tons per hour.

Dust-free unloading

The new Half Frame Bulk Bag Unloader offers total dust containment at low cost by eliminating upper frame components to lift and/or position the bag, instead relying on the user's forklift or plant hoist to suspend the bag above the unit. The bag-to-hopper interface allows dust-tight connections and unrestricted flow between bag spout and hopper and the optional Flexible Screw Conveyor is capable of elevating bulk materials including products that pack, cake, plug, seize, smear or fluidize and blends that separate.

Keep a low profile

Ideal for many food processing applications, the 250 Series center drive line of conveyors combines a unique center drive and very low profile (1.89 in.), which allows use in very tight quarters where conventional conveyors will not fit. The snap-in sealed tail assembly allows belts to be changed in less than 5 mins. and the bearings can be lubricated while running. Corrosion-resistant and magnetic belting are available as well as more than 50 styles of application-specific belting. A wide variety of accessories make the line adaptable to virtually any application.

Flexible and versatile

The Multi-Flex conveyor system brings the greatest flexibility in assembly/changeover ease to low-profile conveyors. The conveyor system has three angle selections (30, 45, and 60 degrees) and eight configurations for easy changeover and product transfer. It combines the industry's quickest endless belt removal and tension/tracking system with rapid, accurate belt calibration. Frame sections permit random repositioning, and drive and tail pulley location can be reversed to meet changing needs.

Gravity loaded

The DPG-B Series gravity loaded bottom-discharge dense phase conveyors are ideal for moving powdered, granular or pelletized friable and abrasive materials. They are rated up to 100+ TPH and provide high material-to-air ratios and extremely low line velocities. The result is smaller line sizes, lower air consumption, reduced dust collection and lower capital investment and operating costs. Abrasive wear and particle degradation are also minimized. Programmable controls offer reduced supervision for automated operation.

Pop-up conveyor

The new Pop-Up Transfer Conveyor lifts items vertically and then conveys them 90 degrees to an adjoining conveyor. The system utilizes a mechanical linkage to guide lifting. Strands are driven by a motorized roller, eliminating chain drives and resulting in quiet operation. Users can choose from Urethane V-belt, Urethane O-ring or chain strands, and can specify strand number and stroke height to suit particular application needs. It is suitable for the food and beverage industry where non-contact between products is crucial.
