Equipment Round Up February 2009 - Pumps and Fluid Handling

Jan. 28, 2009
February's Equipment Round Up focuses on pumps and fluid handling products.

Self-flushing sanitary pump

The G&L Series GSP sanitary pumps are used in the food and beverage industry where clean and slightly charged, polluted abrasive or viscous liquids are to be transferred. The pumps are available in 10 casing sizes in two ranges to match pump performance to hydraulic requirements, providing the best system efficiency and lowest energy use. Featuring all electropolished stainless steel parts, they have an extremely low micro-roughness, resulting in substantially increased resistance to the adhesion of product. A large seal cavity is designed so there is enough turbulence to clean the inner seal of the pump, while an open seal chamber provides internal self-flushing.

Transmit in stainless

Micro Motion 2400S transmitters now come in a 316L stainless steel housing as an option to the standard polyurethane-painted aluminum housing. The integral mounting transmitters also can be ordered with DeviceNet or Profibus communication protocols. Rated to IP66 and IP67, the corrosion-resistant housing is ideal for applications where instruments are subjected to regular caustic washdowns, as in the food and beverage industry. The integral mounting transmitter removes the need for remotely mounted transmitters in a non-wash down or safe area enclosure, simplifying the installation and reducing costs.

Single-tube coriolis

Excellent reproducibility and high accuracy are hallmarks of the Promass S, a single-tube coriolis meter that measures both flow and density. Reduced shear means less stress on your products. The unit requires no inlet or outlet straight run piping and eases concern over pressure loss with highly viscous fluids (it’s suitable for slurries, heavy solids, gels and pastes). It meets 3-A, EHEDG and other FDA guidelines for food plant use.

Affordable pump

As companies within the food and beverage processing industry seek ways of improving plant efficiency, ProCam Smart is an affordable positive displacement pump. It has all the proven benefits of the company’s metering/dosing technology but with the added attraction of a low initial investment cost. It is designed for a range of general purpose metering duties and uses standard components throughout. For processing plants where a number of these pumps are in operation, this means potential savings can be made on stockholding and maintenance.

Precise metering

The Masterflex P/S line of digital peristaltic pumping systems includes standard digital drive, a computerized drive or a stainless steel NEMA 4X process drive. Repeatability of 0.1 percent maximizes productivity in precision feed, batch dispensing and filling applications. A turndown ratio upwards to 6,000-to-1 provides users with substantial flexibility in volume and time of dispense in addition to a smooth, seamless operation and an extremely broad flow range within a single tubing size. Flow capacities are 0-54 GPH.

High solid pumps

High solids pumps dramatically reduce the costs of transferring biomass slurries and DDGS by-products when compared to expensive, maintenance-prone conveyor systems. These pumps represent significant advances in technology in that they easily handle abrasive and corrosive DDGS applications. In addition, they eliminate odors and spillage typically found with open conveyor systems, reduce capital and maintenance costs (due to the closed pipe system and fewer moving parts) and extend service life.

Reduce washdown costs

A patented control technology for high-pressure positive displacement process pumps, the Unigy pump-control system employs mathematical models to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs for washdown applications in the food and beverage industry. Compatible with both clean-in-place and steam-in-place operations, this technology employs intelligent pump-control software to produce the precise flow rates and pressures demanded by the application. It continually senses demand and manages pump speed and applied torque to satisfy variations in process demand, significantly lowering energy consumption and costs normally associated with maintaining an overworked system. It can be retrofitted into existing process systems and incorporated into new installations.

Easy cleaning gate valves

For material handling applications that require daily cleaning or sanitation of equipment, Quick Clean Orifice Gate Valves can be readily disassembled, cleaned and reassembled without tools for fast, flexible maintenance. Traditional knife gates or butterfly valves rely on soft rubber seals that erode or tear away during use, allowing material leakage. This patented design eliminates those problems, improving production and decreasing labor and equipment costs. The blade and seal design allows the valve to “self-clean” on the opening stroke, preventing material from packing on the valve’s internal seals.

Thin liquid pumps

The innovative LVP Series of stainless steel vane pumps provides up to 14 bar (200 PSI) thin liquid capability at capacities up to 160 GPM. The pumps are designed for thin, corrosive liquids at higher pressures than other positive displacement pumps. These pumps provide exceptional performance, advanced durability and application flexibility. Their simple installation and ease of maintenance help realize enhanced productivity and a lower total cost of ownership. They’re also maintenance-friendly, allowing complete draining and easy vane or seal replacement without removing the pump from its system.

Many sizes and pressures

Series PZ pulse metering pumps are suitable for accurate, reliable injection of a variety of liquids including chemicals, nutrients and disinfectants. The pumps have powerful control options and a range of sizes and pressures (from 1 to 1,300 ml/min at pressures up to 220 psi). Flow rates and accuracy are unaffected by fluctuations in voltage; they will operate any single phase voltage from 94 VAC to 264 VAC. The pumps are available in manual control, external input and programmable models. All of the control features are onboard every programmable model pump, including pH control and residual chlorine control, without requiring a separate PID controller.

Durable and long-lasting

Durability is a key advantage of the Vax valve, which is suitable for applications that require fast actuation, durability and reliability. It combines a process valve and an actuator in a single integrated unit with only one moving part. Its coaxial design offers high flow rates with minimal pressure loss, while extending the valve’s cycle life by as much as 10 times that of conventional valves. The electric version functions like a direct acting solenoid valve. Since it works with the forces of flow instead of against them, it is suitable for most vacuum, gaseous, gelatinous, highly viscous, pasty, aggressive or contaminated or recycled fluids and gases from vacuum to 600 PSI.

High viscosity pumps

The newly redesigned Masterflex B/T Process Pumps enable bulk transfer of viscous and shear-sensitive fluids with ease, cost-effectiveness and reliability. At the core of this design is the pump head door that opens fully to allow easy access to change or inspect the tubing. Optimal occlusion is automatic when the door is closed and latched. A secure retention mechanism grips the tubing for trouble-free loading and prevents tubing creep or roll. Additionally, a new flush-mounted, corrosion-proof latch offers one-handed opening and closing without the use of tools. The consistent performance of these pumps relies on the pump tubing which features retention marks to indicate the exact tubing alignment needed for optimal performance and tubing life.Cole-Parmer; Vernon Hills, Ill.

They have 5 percent or less ferrite content to prevent rouging (less than 1 percent ferrite is available as an option). All welded end parts are made from 316L stainless steel supplied with very low sulphur content. All wetted parts are polished to 14-18 Ra, 240 grit.Sharpe Valves; Northlake, Ill.
