New Food & Beverage Product Rollout: August 2021

Aug. 19, 2021
Our editors selected the following food and beverage products to feature in our August 2021 issue of Food Processing. See which products they chose.
With 6g of fiber, 15g of protein and a one-year ambient shelf life, there’s a lot going for the Candwich, a new vendable concept from MK1 Foods designed to fit existing soft drink vending machines. The sturdy can also makes it easy to store and maintain quality in places like backpacks, desk drawers and car consoles.

The first offering from this new brand is the peanut butter and jelly sandwich kit, which contains two slices of whole wheat bread, along with individual packets of peanut butter and grape or strawberry jelly. There is also a wooden spreader and a wet wipe for convenient clean up. The brand plans to add other offerings soon, including pizza pockets and barbecue chicken, with some including desserts.

One peanut butter and jelly sandwich provide 430 calories. They are currently selling online in six packs for $16.99. To maintain quality for one year, the company says that the bread’s water activity is carefully managed and that it is sealed in a foil wrap with an oxygen scavenger packet to remove oxygen.

An Elevated Egg Experience

Utopihen Farms is the newest brand of premium eggs from the fourth-generation Weaver family farm. George Weaver III launched cage-free Nature’s Yoke eggs in 2000. Noow, with his son George Weaver IV, he's entering the pasture-raised eggs business. The Utopihen Farms brand includes four products in a range that responds to consumer concerns around value, quality and allergies. They are: Original Pasture-Raised Eggs, Organic Pasture-Raised Eggs, Soy-Free Pasture-Raised Eggs and Pasture-Raised Duck Eggs.

Pasture-raised is a term defined by Humane Farm Animal Care, the organization behind the Certified Humane mark featured on Utopihen Farms’ egg cartons. The standards require that the birds have daily access to pasture for at least six hours and they must have enough space to spread their wings. The brand currently works with 24 family farms in the area around the company’s headquarters farm in Pennsylvania, which is why the eggs are first rolling out in the eastern U.S. Plans are to expand into the Midwest later this year and eventually to the West Coast. The chicken eggs are brown, while the duck eggs are white.

Fashionable Ice Cream

Founded by supermodel Tyra Banks, SMiZE Cream is a superpremium, custard-style ice cream that inspires you to reach for more than just a spoon, as the surprise is at the bottom of the cup. The SMiZE Surprize is a cookie dough truffle covered in naturally colored sprinkles. It’s said to be a tasty reward that symbolizes what the brand stands for: goal getting and dream catching.

The line is launching in seven flavors: Best Vanilla I Ever Had (vanilla ice cream with fruity cereal truffle), Brownies, I Love You (milk chocolate ice cream, brownie pieces, brownie batter bites and fudge with chocolate blueberry truffle), Caramel Cookie Queen (vanilla ice cream, caramel butter cookies and salted caramel swirl with toffee caramel truffle), Chocolate Barbeque (smoked chocolate ice cream, brownie pieces and roasted almonds with bourbon truffle), Purple Cookie Mon-Star & Me (purple sweet cream ice cream and Oreo cookie pieces with cookies and cream truffle), Salted Caramel King (salted sweet cream ice cream, butter-roasted pecans and salted caramel butter with salted caramel truffle) and Strawberry BirthYay! Cake (strawberry ice cream, cake pieces and colorful sprinkles with birthday cake truffle).

Tex-Mex Simplified

General Mills’ Old El Paso brand is helping families take mealtimes to the next level with a range of new convenient meal kits, sauces and sides that are ready in 30 minutes or less. The burrito bowl kits come in Chipotle Chicken, Adobo Steak and Seasoned Beef flavors. The kits include cilantro lime white rice, seasoning mix and queso blanco sauce.

The taco kits drive home the food truck experience. The three varieties each include 12 street taco flour tortillas and seasoning mix. Carne Asada Steak includes medium creamy chipotle sauce. Asado Chicken comes with medium creamy jalapeño sauce, while Barbacoa Beef contains mild salsa verde.

Both kits require the addition of cooked protein and/or grilled vegetables and are intended to serve four. They have a suggested retail price of $3.99. There’s also two new condiments--Spicy Queso Blanco and Cilantro Lime Fire Roasted Verde--that come in 9-oz., no-drip, squeeze bottles, and Cilantro Lime Rice side dish. The sauces sell for $3.88 and the side for $1.89.

Empanadas with an Italian Twist

Brazi Bites, manufacturers of Latin-inspired, gluten-free and better-for-you foods, is growing its frozen empanadas line with
Pizza-nadas. The new finger food starts with the brand's same Brazilian cheese bread base made from clean ingredients, such as tapioca flour, eggs, cheese and milk, and then gets stuffed with fresh mozzarella, uncured pepperoni and tomato sauce.

Consumers take Pizza’nadas straight from the freezer to the oven or air fryer for a snack that is ready in minutes. The 10-oz. bags contain about 10 bites and retail for $5.99. A three-piece serving provides 250 calories, 15g fat and 8g protein.

“As we watched the frozen and nostalgic categories catapult over the past year, it became clear that there was a huge opportunity for us to capitalize on a white space in the market by creating the perfect better-for-you, gluten- and grain-free product to bring the two categories together,” says Junea Rocha, co-founder and chief marketing officer. “Pizza bites were the No. 1 requested product by our consumers over the past 18 months. We took the idea straight to R&D.”

Crunchy Keto Snacks

Founded in 2017, Catalina Snacks is growing its keto-friendly brand, Catalina Crunch, with new savory Crunch Mixes, while also unveiling a refreshed brand identity with new logo, icon, tagline and brand colors. The snack mixes come in Cheddar, Creamy Ranch, Spicy Kick and Traditional flavors.

They are lower in sugar, lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein then similar crunchy snacks in the marketplace. One serving contains 5-8g protein and 4g fiber. The product is made with specially curated natural ingredients, including Catalina Crunch Keto-Friendly Cereal alongside party mix ingredients, such as cashews, chickpea pretzels, almonds, pecans and cheese crisps.

“Catalina Crunch has always been my creative outlet when I couldn’t find satisfying alternatives for my favorite foods,” says Krishna Kaliannan, founder and CEO. “Our first and foremost goal has been to make the best-tasting foods that are actually better-for-you, and we are thrilled to introduce our first savory snacks. These better-for-you party mixes combine all my favorites into one bag to create a cleaner snacking option that is protein- and fiber-filled.”
