For those of us not fortunate enough to have an opportunity to dine in the Mediterranean town of Roses, north of Barcelona, Spain at El Bulli restaurant, voted by many as the greatest restaurant in the world, we are simply out of time and luck.

Catalan chef Ferran Adria, who for two decades has been the leading catalyst and inspiration for avant-garde cuisine, has decided to permanently close his restaurant and replace it with an academy for advanced study, reports RestaurantNews.com.

In January he told The Wall Street Journal that he would go on hiatus in 2012, but reopen in 2014. Although El Bulli was only open for half the year, it benefited from the new techniques, foams and other culinary wizardry that Adria created during the other half of the year.

So, why change his strategy? Adria and his partner, Juli Soler, lost a half million Euros a year on the restaurant and his cooking workshop in Barcelona.
