Missouri Governor Vetoes Two Bills That Could Spell Trouble for Smithfield Purchase

Governor Jay Nixon vetoed two bills on July 2 that would have smoothed the way for the $4.7 billion purchase of Smithfield Foods Inc.
Several states in the Midwest -- Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wisconsin -- have laws on their books that prohibit foreign ownership of agricultural land.
