According to ingredient manufacturer Tate & Lyle, Healthy adults can experience an improvement in bowel habits by consuming more resistant starch. The company recently released new clinical research demonstrating resistant starch as an important fiber for a healthy gut. The research reports that incorporating 25 grams per day of an insoluble natural dietary fiber into the diet promotes regularity in healthy adults without producing significant gastrointestinal side effects.Adding bulk also may promote the health of the colon by speeding up transit through the digestive system.“The faster food moves through the digestive tract, the less frequently harmful compounds, such as carcinogens, come in contact with the digestive system,” explains Lisa Sanders, Ph.D., RD, Tate & Lyle. “The added bulk also helps to dilute any harmful compounds that may exist and minimize their negative impact on the colon.”The study’s results were published online in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition in August 2009.
