Aunt Jemima’s “heir” is going to hand out $1 million in grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping Black women and girls.
PepsiCo announced May 13 that the grants will be made on behalf of Pearl Milling Company, the replacement brand name for the Aunt Jemima line of pancake mixes and ancillary products. The grant program will be called “the P.E.A.R.L. Pledge,” for “prosperity, empowerment, access, representation and leadership.”
The P.E.A.R.L. Pledge is a multi-year program, with $1 million allocated for the first year. Grants from $25,000 to $100,000 will be available to nonprofit organizations, which can either apply directly or be nominated by individuals. Decisions will be made by an advisory council comprising both PepsiCo employees and “diverse external partners knowledgeable about the needs in the Black community,” according to a PepsiCo statement.
