At the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association (IDDBA) show in Anaheim, Calif., June 4-6, charcuterie processor Veroni will introduce its animal well-being program to attendees. In conjunction with that introduction, the company has announced that its products will feature the certification claim “Humanly Raised Meat” moving forward. All Veroni product trays will carry the claim by the end of 2023, the company said.
Veroni sources its pork from sustainable farms that adhere to an animal-welfare program to manufacture the cold cuts and charcuterie meats. Pork raised under these standards is labeled and segregated throughout the production process.
Under Veroni’s humane-handling standards, pork producers must follow the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare:
- Freedom from hunger, malnutrition and thirst
- Freedom from fear and distress
- Freedom from physical and thermal discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury and disease
- Freedom to express normal patterns of behavior
Farmers also feed a vegetarian diet and do not use hormones on pigs designated for Veroni products. These requirements extend throughout the hogs’ lives, including their living spaces, feed, health and transportation off the farm to the processing facility.
