British Columbia, Canada-based plant-based meat alternatives processor No Meat Factory has purchased a former Twin City Foods frozen vegetable processing plant in Stanwood, Wash., for $19.4 million in February, according to news reports.
No Meat Factory was founded in 2019 and the Stanwood plant will be its first U.S. facility — its original production facility is in Coldwater, British Columbia.
No Meat Factory’s restart of the facility is expected to create 150 jobs by 2024, and after the company’s investment of up to $20 million in renovations and improvements, it is expected to produce veggie burgers and nuggets, a veggie-based ground beef substitute, seafood alternatives and extruded products, such as sausages and wieners, according to a release from the Washington State Department of Commerce.
The local news report states that Twin City Foods closed the nearly 200,000-square-foot Stanwood facility in 2018, moving operations to central Washington to save on transportation costs. Twin City Foods continued to use the facility for storage, and a cold storage operator began leasing space at the plant in 2020 as well.
