Chobani CEO Acquires Anchor Brewing Co., Promises Revival of the Business
The assets of San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Co. have been acquired by Shepherd Futures, the family office of Chobani CEO and founder Hamdi Ulukaya, according to a release. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it includes all assets of Anchor and allows the 128-year-old brewery to live on — something die-hard fans had hoped would happen after Anchor shut down last July.
Ulukaya intends to bring back the iconic brand that so many in San Francisco and around the world have loved for so long, the release said.
It’s a resurrection for what has been called America’s first craft brewery, which was founded in 1896 in San Francisco. Ulukaya highlighted that legacy in sharing his excitement for bringing back the company and brand.
“San Francisco is at the heart of Anchor Brewing, and Anchor embodies so much of what makes this city great,” he said in the release. “I am humbled and excited to be part of this city and its rich community of people, who have a spirit that is special and unique. I have learned so much about Anchor and its role in San Francisco’s journey, and I look forward to doing whatever I can to support this amazing story of revitalization.”
