Sweetmore Bakeries Adds Azteca Bakeries to Its Family of Businesses
Chicago-based Sweetmore Bakeries is adding to its family of specialty bakery businesses with the acquisition of Azteca Bakeries, a wholesale manufacturer of authentic Mexican pastries and baked goods, according to a release announcing the deal. Azteca is the fifth bakery to be folded into the Sweetmore business, following Akron, Ohio’s Main Street Gourmet and Biscotti Brothers of Greensburg, Pa., in 2020, Meurer Brothers Bakery in Fond du Lac, Wis., in 2021, and Sweet Eddie’s of Smyrna, Ga. in 2024.
Azteca was founded in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1954, and offers a variety of pan dulce including pastries, cookies, breads and muffins. Sweetmore believes Azteca’s differentiated product assortment complements its portfolio, making it a great match for the business.
In addition to the product lines Azteca brings to the portfolio, Sweetmore also offers consumers biscotti, brownies, cinnamon rolls, cookies, danish, dessert bars, Mexican pastries, muffins, granola, icings, fillings and more, through retail in-store bakery and foodservice channels. Sweetmore is owned by Shore Capital and operates five facilities, employing more than 500 people.
