Demolition began last week on the original World of Coca-Cola museum. The downtown Atlanta building, near the state capital, is being razed for construction of a government parking lot.
It hasn’t been the Coke museum for years. Once the city’s most-visited attraction, according to Associated Press, the original three-story structure, which opened in 1990, was bought by the state of Georgia in 2005. It was pretty far from the soft drink company’s headquarters, but the new museum is close.
In 2007, Coca-Cola opened a new, bigger World of Coca-Cola to showcase its product development and marketing history across from Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park, where the city hosted the 1996 Olympics. The park has become the heart of the city's tourism and is adjacent to the Georgia Aquarium and Georgia World Congress Center convention hall.
