Remember when thieves would rob armored cars for cash or gold? With the price of eggs skyrocketing, maybe that precious commodity should be transported in refrigerated armor cars.
Approximately 100,000 eggs were reported stolen from the back of a distribution trailer Saturday night (Feb. 1) in Greencastle, Pa. The eggs were from egg producer Pete & Gerry’s Organics.
Our calculation: 8,333 dozen eggs at about $5 per dozen equals $41,666.
In related news, the Waffle House chain of diners is adding a 50-cent per egg surcharge because of the higher cost of eggs, according to signs posted at its restaurants and seen by CNN. The surcharge will be adjusted or removed based on market conditions, the Waffle House statement said.
The price of eggs has been driven up by the spread of bird flu/avian influenza in poultry flocks across the U.S. and across the world. In a December 2024 report, USDA said egg prices had risen 7.7% last year, and the agency predicts an 11.4% rise this year.
