Flowers To Shut Atlanta Commercial Bakery, Idling 176

March 13, 2025
2024 sales eked out a 0.2% dollar increase although volumes declined.

Amid a “difficult economic environment,” Flowers Foods’ commercial baking facility in Atlanta will close on April 16, resulting in 176 layoffs, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The facility makes bread, buns and rolls for retail and foodservice customers.

The company did not mention the closing in its fourth-quarter/year end report in February, but did note sales in the fourth quarter of 2024 decreased 1.6% to $1.111 billion “as positive pricing/mix was more than offset by volume declines.” But net income increased 21%.

For the full year, sales increased 0.2% to $5.103 billion “as positive pricing/mix and the Papa Pita acquisition more than offset volume declines.” Net income doubled to $248 million.

Sales should improve this year with the just-completed acquisition of Simple Mills.
