Fourth Street Foods Plant Closing in Charleroi, Pennsylvania

Financial difficulties force employer to lay off 252 before the end of this month, and possibly closing the company.

Fourth Street Barbecue/Fourth Street Foods will lay off at least 252 employees at its two Charleroi, Pa., plants by Oct. 31 and apparently close one, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice filed with the state of Pennsylvania.

The company, which makes and packages frozen sandwiches, bowls and dinners for retailers nationwide, has hit some financial difficulties lately, missing some debt payments. It’s agreed to hire two consulting firms to help restructure its finances and pursue a sale of some or all of its assets, according to a local press report.

The WARN notice calls the filing a “closure,” which if company-wide would end the jobs of more than 400 people. A year ago, twice as many were employed at the two plants.
