Climate change has cost the world 21% of potential growth in agricultural output over the last few decades, according to a new study done by Cornell University.
The damage done to the world’s crops by climate change is greater than the ability of agricultural technology to make it up, the report. “Even though globally agriculture is more productive, that greater productivity on average doesn’t translate into more climate resilience,” an author of the paper told Bloomberg.
The report, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, estimates that the 21% loss in potential growth is equivalent to losing the last seven years of growth in agriculture.
The damage is especially bad in tropical regions, which are liable to be poorer and more dependent on agriculture.
