Fresh Del Monte Produce Hits Scope 1 and 2 GHG Goals Seven Years Early
Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. released its 2023 Sustainability Report, in which it announced it had reached its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals six years earlier than anticipated.
Fresh Del Monte committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) using 2019 data as a baseline and targeting a 27.5% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. It also aimed for a 12.3% reduction of Scope 3 emissions based on 2020 baseline data. In its 2023 report, the company announced it had achieved a 28% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and had also reduced its Scope 1 CO2 emissions from vessel shipping by 19% in 2024 — ahead of its goal trim by 10% by the year 2025.
Other sustainability-specific achievements noted in the report included: the introduction of reusable plastic containers for North America banana shipments, eliminating the need for 758 tons of single-use paper and more than 5 tons of plastic; completion of ecosystem mapping at its farms in Guatemala and Costa Rica; the planting of 2.49 million trees since 2016, quickly closing in on its goal to plant 2.5 million by 2025; and its partnership to inaugurate a biofertilizer plant in Kenya, which uses pineapple residues to produce biofertilizers.
