As promised, the FDA will hold a public meeting on Sept. 25 to discuss proposed improvements in the agency’s post-market assessment of chemicals in food – including the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) process, food additives, color additives, food contact substances and contaminants.
The agency’s handling of all those topics has been under heavy criticism in recent years.
In addition to explaining its plans for an “enhanced systematic process for post-market assessment of chemicals in food,” the agency wants to hear stakeholder perspectives on the proposal. “This information will help inform our thinking and further the development of the process,” the agency wrote in its announcement.
“This is intended to guide our post-market assessment work going forward and includes a transparent process for identifying and prioritizing food chemicals currently in the market for safety reviews. This project is part of a larger enhanced approach for food chemical safety.”
There will be limited in-person attendance and virtual attendance. More specifics, including the time and how to register, were not available yet, but should be later this month on this meeting page.
