Nearly 15,000 Physicians Sign Petition Against RFK Jr.’s Nomination to HHS
Nov. 25, 2024
They claim he’s not qualified to lead the sprawling Dept. of Health and Human Services, parent of the FDA and CDC.
As of this morning, 14,456 physicians have signed a petition objecting to President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of the Dept. of Health and Human Services, parent of the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“The enormity of the new role — the HHS secretary oversees 13 federal agencies and their combined $1.7 trillion budget — will hand over a significant amount of responsibility for the nation’s health to Mr. Kennedy, who has limited applicable experience in the field and a history of promoting debunked health conspiracy theories as well as being a vaccine skeptic,” according to an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
“Many physicians are looking at this and thinking, ‘We’re going to watch the destruction of the public health system,’” said Alice Rothchild, a Seattle-based retired OB-GYN who was one of those to sign.
While the article is tilted toward the medical side of FDA and HHS, it includes references to RFK Jr.’s criticisms of the food industry – including synthetic food dyes and other additives, high-fructose corn syrup and ultraprocessed foods in general.
