Chocolates Recalled Due to Undeclared Viagra Ingredient

Gear Isle recalls Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Sachet and Ilum Sex Chocolate because of undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients sildenafil and tadalafil.

A California company is recalling chocolates because of the typical mistake of forgetting to declare an ingredient: the active compounds in erectile dysfunction drugs.

Gear Isle of West Sacramento, Calif. (Bay Area) is voluntarily recalling the products because they’ve been found to contain undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients sildenafil (the key ingredient in Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis).

The FDA announcement of the recall did not mention any stiff penalties.

Gear Isle specializes in “adult novelties,” some of which glow in the dark, and the company website warns Gear Isle doesn’t make any of the products it sells.

Frankly, it’s difficult to believe this is a surprise, given the product names: Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Sachet and Ilum Sex Chocolate. The recall began in late March.

“Use of products with undeclared active ingredients sildenafil and tadalafil may pose a threat to consumers because the active ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life-threatening,” reads the statement on the FDA website.

The agency appeared to be satisfied with the company’s performance.

“Among the adult male population who are most likely to use these products, adult males who use nitrates for cardiac conditions are most at risk from these products,” the FDA continued. “To date, Gear Isle has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.”

Nor were any surprise positive events mentioned.

The products are labeled as dietary supplements and were distributed nationwide via internet sales. Gear Isle is notifying its customers by letter and is arranging for returns and refunds of all recalled products.
