The World Food Program of the United Nations has won the Nobel Peace Prize for its work in dealing with the food problems caused by the pandemic, war and other disturbances.
They’re a worthy recipient. They do wonderful work alleviating the intense suffering in tormented places like Syria, Congo and Yemen.
And yet...
I cannot shake the sneaking suspicion that at least a tiny part of the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s motivation in awarding this year’s prize was to troll President Trump.
Trump is known to be obsessed with getting the Nobel Peace Prize, probably because his predecessor won one. He and his administration have often demonstrated their contempt for the UN and other international organizations. And most compellingly, Hunter Biden, the son of Trump’s opponent (and a frequent target of Trump’s attacks), served as board chair of World Food Program USA, the organization’s American arm, from 2013 to 2019.
But nah. Let’s give the Nobel committee the benefit of the doubt. After all, what do Norwegians know about trolls?
