Goya Foods CEO Slammed for Praising Trump

July 10, 2020
What was supposed to be a feel-good moment at the White House for Goya Foods turned sour when its CEO sparked a backlash by praising President Trump.

Robert Unanue made remarks at the White House, next to Trump, on July 9 to mark Goya’s contribution of product to food banks as part of Trump’s Hispanic Prosperity Initiative. He said America is “blessed” to have Trump as president and called him “an incredible builder.”

That didn’t sit right with some Hispanic politicians, in light of Trump’s overall relationship with Latinos. He started his campaign by accusing Mexico of “sending rapists” and promising to build a wall on the Mexican border. Once elected, he heightened tensions by instituting what some considered abusive treatment of Latino refugees.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) implied that she would learn to cook her own adobo (a Philippine dish or sauce):

By the end of the day, #BoycottGoya and #goyaway were trending hashtags on Twitter.
