Washington's I-522 Appears to Fail

Nov. 7, 2013
With nearly all ballots counted, Washington's I-522 won the support of about 45 percent of voters, to 55 percent opposed.

On the morning after the polls closed, Washington state’s ballot initiative 522, which would have required labeling of foods with genetically modified ingredients, appeared to fail. With nearly all ballots counted, I-522 won the support of about 45 percent of voters, to 55 percent opposed. Local media reports said there was heavy out-of-state funding and lobbying for both sides of the issue. It was the second such test of GMO labeling: California voters defeated a similar measure last November 52-48 percent.
