A man just fired Sept. 25 from an Oklahoma food plant beheaded a female employee and stabbed another woman before the president shot him. The suspect had been trying to convert employees to Islam, according to reports.
Media reports said Alton Nolen, 30, was fired from Vaughan Foods in Moore, Okla., a wholly owned subsidiary of Reser's Fine Foods, which processes value-added vegetables, refrigerated deli salads, soups and stews, sauces, sandwiches and fruit. NBCNews.com said he drove to another part of the facility and walked into an office where he used a knife – similar to ones found at the facility, according to the report – to behead Colleen Hufford, 54.
He then used the same knife to repeatedly stab Traci Johnson, 43. Mark Vaughan, who is the company's president and chief operating officer and a reserve deputy with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, shot Nolen as he attacked the second victim. Nolen was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to survive.
The circumstances of Nolen's firing weren't made public. Some co-workers told police that he had recently converted to Islam and had been trying to convert them. Law enforcement officials told NBC News that his conversion took place during his recent stint in prison, which ended in March 2013.
