Ferrero Brings Kinder Joy Eggs and Tic Tac Gum to the U.S. in 2018

Nov. 16, 2017
The new egg-shaped Kinder Joy treats with a surprise inside and new Tic Tac gum will roll out to U.S. markets in January 2018.
Ferrero U.S.A, Inc., best known for its Ferrero Rocher confections, Nutella hazelnut spread and Tic Tac mints, will soon be adding a long-awaited product to its U.S. portfolio: Kinder Joy candy-filled treats. The creamy candy features plus a "myster" toy in the product's egg-shaped container. The company also plans to roll out Tic Tac gum to stores in early 2018. Kinder Joy will also launch in the U.S. in January 2018, the Italian-based candymaker said.

First noted by Food Processing in its Sweets & Snacks Expo report this summer, Kinder Joy comprises two sealed egg halves, one side housing a soft, sweet, cream and cocoa-layered filling incorporating two round chocolate-covered wafer bites, also filled with cocoa cream; the other side of the egg holds a tiny surprise toy. A small spoon is provided to scoop up the cream filling.

"When you're a kid, every surprise counts, especially the little ones," says Paul Chibe, CEO of Ferrero North America. "Kinder Joy is a fun, new way to help parents bring little surprises to their kids anytime they want. The delicious, unique taste of Kinder Joy and the wide variety of toys will delight kids, while mom and dad will be surprised by the high quality of the confection and toys – it's unlike anything currently on the U.S. market."

Currently sold in more than 170 countries, the Kinder brand offers a wide range of chocolate and other confections. As an added bonus with every purchase, parents also will be able to access Magic Kinder, an edutainment app, offering a digital world of fun and education. Available on iOS and Android app stores as well as the Magic Kinder website, the QR code provided on the information leaflet accompanying the Kinder Joy toys will provide more details.

"Today's parents are looking for an elevated experience for their children, even in their treats. Kinder Joy offers more than just a sweet treat and mystery toy, it also gives parents the opportunity to engage with their children through the Magic Kinder online and mobile platforms," added Chibe.

Kinder Joy will be sold for the suggested retail price of $1.34 per egg through the holidays in Walmart stores. Ferrero, which rose from a family pastry shop into one of the world's largest candymakers, first entered the U.S. with Tic Tac breath mints in 1969. The company later introduced Nutella in 1983, which went on to become hugely popular after a big advertising promotion.

Reports say the company wants to significantly boost its U.S. presence. Earlier this year, it purchased Chicago-based confectionery Fannie May from 1-800-Flowers.
