Nestlé Changes Names of Red Skins, Chicos

Nestlé has announced new names for two brands of Australian candy that had been tagged for being racially insensitive.
Nestlé has announced new names for two brands of Australian candy that had been tagged for being racially insensitive.

Both are lollies, an Australian version of hard or semi-hard candy. Red Skins candy will now be known as Red Ripper, while Chicos will be rebranded as Cheekies.

Even though the old names were more offensive to Americans than Australians, they were deemed “out of step with the company’s values,” Nestlé said in a statement.

Product with the new names will appear in Australia early next year. Nestlé is reportedly also looking at other non-U.S. brands with problematic names, like Beso de Negra (“Black Kiss”) in Colombia.
