Smithfield Foods to Close San Jose Plant

Feb. 11, 2020
Smithfield Foods has announced the closing of a processing plant in San Jose, Calif.

Smithfield Foods has announced the closing of a processing plant in San Jose, Calif., with the loss of 139 jobs.

The plant is closing because the lease is about to expire and the property owner is selling the facility to another party, the company told the San Francisco Chronicle. The closing comes seven months after a closing announcement for another Smithfield processing facility in San Leandro, about 30 miles away.

Smithfield announced about four years ago that it would pursue a restructuring that would involve “a centralized structure,” but said at the time that this would not involve plant closures.
