International Trade Show Organizers Ponder Return to Normal

Dec. 15, 2020
In a culture set upon safety procedures, how safe do exhibitors and trade show attendees really feel about hitting the show floor in 2021?

"If we produce it, will they come?" That's an abbreviated version of what Karen Langhauser, head of Pharma Manufacturing, poses in her recent article, When can international trade shows resume?

Pharma Manufacturing is a sister brand to Food Processing and shares a lot of overlap in the quality, safety, and packaging space. In the article, Langhauser ponders what trade shows will look like in a world where personal safety becomes a form of currency in the safety product economy.

Case in Point: last month, Messe Düsseldorf announced it had reached an agreement with its partners from trade associations and the trade fair advisory board on how best to proceed with interpack, otherwise known as the International Trade Fair for Processing & Packaging, February 25-March 3, 2021. While there was excitement to resume some level of normalcy, exhibitors at the 2021 conference weren't as enthusiastic to return to the trade show floor.  The loss of enthusiasm snowballed, and less than a month after announcing the 2021 trade show dates, Messe Düsseldorf cancelled the show entirely.

The food and beverage industry has witnessed a similar downturn in events. What used to be calendars filled with flavors, formulations, and fervor for innovation has been replaced with virtual events.
