Bakers Want Soy Oil for Food, Not Cars

The American Bakers Association is asking the Biden administration to ratchet back America’s use of crops for fuel, saying it’s cutting into the availability of food ingredients.

The ABA met with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to discuss requirements for the Renewable Fuel Standard, the federal law that mandates how much crop-based fuel gets blended into gasoline, Reuters reports. They want the standard lowered to 2019 levels.

About 40% of soybean oil goes for fuel, according to Reuters. The ABA is concerned that suppliers of soy and canola oil say they’re running out of supplies.

"We are trying to ring the alarm without being alarmists," ABA president Robb MacKie told Reuters.

It was unclear how much, if any, influence the ABA’s request would have. An EPA spokesperson told Reuters that the agency “always appreciates input from stakeholders.”
