China Back to Inspecting Frozen Food for COVID

China is once more claiming that frozen and refrigerated foods are a major source of coronavirus transmission.

China is once more claiming that frozen and refrigerated foods are a major source of coronavirus transmission, in the wake of a new outbreak of the Delta variant.

Chinese authorities are stepping up inspections of frozen food in Zhengzhou, Haikou and other cities, swabbing product and packages to test for the virus. Frozen pork and beef supplies were seized from a restaurant in Nantong when its owners could not produce inspection certificates, Bloomberg reports.

China has long insisted that the coronavirus can be preserved and transmitted on frozen food – a proposition that is accepted by virtually no authorities outside China. Inspections of frozen food snarled imports and led to long delays, especially for imported pork, a staple of the Chinese diet.

The latest outbreak, involving the Delta variant, centered in Nanjing. Authorities in Nanjing have tested 35,000 food samples, and all were negative, according to Bloomberg.
