The Hershey Co. is testing a “plant-based” version of chocolate, made with oats.

Hershey’s Oat Made is being test-marketed in selected retailers across the country. The oats presumably replace the milk in milk chocolate, making the product vegan. Hershey said that oats were the preferred substitute among several ones tested.

The market test is being done in stores with clienteles that are especially receptive to plant-based food alternatives, according to a blog on the company’s website. Hershey worked with retailers to locate these stores. In some cases they were within a certain geographic area; in others it was “more of a selection of a range of stores across the country,” the blog post says. The Oat Made market tests are scheduled to run through next June.
