Hormel Foods has formed a partnership with a meat-analogue company to develop alternative protein products.

Hormel’s incubator arm, 199 Ventures, will partner with The Better Meat Co. to work on products using Better Meat’s technology. Better Meat developed a process of making mycoprotein, which it trade-named Rhiza, out of a “potato-based fermentation,” according to a company statement.

"As a global branded food company, we understand our food culture is changing at a rapid pace, and people are curious and willing to try great tasting, plant-based proteins," said Fred Halvin, vice president of corporate development at Hormel Foods. "We are excited to work with The Better Meat Co. team to continue to offer delicious and convenient mycoprotein and plant-based protein products."

Better Meat struck a similar partnership in 2019 with Perdue Farms to develop Perdue Chicken Plus, a line of nuggets, tenders and patties that blends chicken with cauliflower and chickpeas.
