Oatly Plans Three New Plants

Oatly Group AB has announced plans to build three new plants, including one in the United States, to handle growing demand for its signature oat milk.

In a Nov. 15 earnings call, Oatly executives said the company will build and new plants in the U.S., the United Kingdom and China by 2023. Specific locations were not provided.

Oatly is in expansion mode, having opened plants earlier this year in China, Singapore and Utah. Lack of production capacity is turning out to be a major problem for the company, especially with supply chain disruptions related to the pandemic. Equipment problems at the Utah facility interrupted production there, and other problems arose at a plant in Sweden.

“Production capacity has been a major constraint on our growth, and we have made substantial investments to scale our production capacity and address supply shortages due to the massive demand for our products globally,” COO Peter Bergh said during the earnings call.
