Tofurky, a processor of plant-analogue proteins, has announced a collaboration to incorporate protein from algae into future products

Tofurky, a processor of plant-analogue proteins, has announced a collaboration to incorporate protein from algae into future products.

Tofurky will partner with Triton Algae Innovations to develop products that incorporate protein from Triton’s “essential red” algae. Strains of algae are selected and cultivated (but not genetically modified) that are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids and other beneficial nutrients.

The products in development are scheduled for rollout in the first quarter of next year, although the company announcement did not furnish any descriptions or other specifics.

“This is a unique and timely opportunity for us to combine our knowledge and understanding of the plant-based market with the nutrition and one-of-a-kind natural supply-chain technology created by Triton’s algae,” Jaime Athos, CEO of Tofurky, said in a statement. “While we can’t share what it is just yet, the result will entail products that resonate with our core audience, and also be attractive to the rapidly growing segment of new flexitarians increasingly drawn to plant-based foods.”
