Frozen empanadas with meat filling are being subjected to a recall because they bear a USDA inspection stamp that is apparently phony.
SAS Foods is recalling about 3,700 pounds of beef and chicken empanadas because there is no record of their having been properly inspected. The packaging bears a standard USDA inspection mark that refers to “EST. 38548,” but the USDA says that number is for an establishment that has nothing to do with SAS Foods.
SAS Foods is based in Elk Grove Village, a suburb of Chicago. No one is alleged to have been harmed by the product, which was packaged in one-pound bags and released to retailers in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The investigation sprang from an anonymous tip to USDA.
