Tyson Foods has initiated a voluntary recall of 8.5 million pounds of cooked chicken products after a USDA investigation found evidence of listeria contamination.
The products include boneless, skinless breasts and grilled strips. After receiving a report June 9 of two consumers contracting listeriosis, the USDA launched an investigation, which found three listeriosis cases, including one death. The investigation found chicken samples with a strain of listeria similar to those causing the illnesses, including one found at a Tyson facility.
Tyson is engaging in a voluntary recall of products processed at its plant in Dexter, Mo. A company spokesperson emphasized that Tyson is engaging in the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”
